catherine wheel lol, hi there bigmamma,
the one time i love to hear the fireworks is when the newyear is in, they give me gosebumps
Me too !!. Why can't we have new legislation that only allows fireworks to be sold to official organisations organising fireworks displays, rather than to individuals, only certain nights of the year when they can be let off.?
I'm so glad other people have a prob with the noise - 3 days running here, and some of the public displays have made the house shake, literally!!! Are fireworks more powerful than they used to be? Surely it should only happen on one night? I live in the East end of London, and we get Diwali as well - more fireworks - and then a lot of kids turning up on Trick or Treat night - 20 groups of kids that I didn't know!!!! All wanting money of course. Am I a total killjoy, or has it all got out of hand???
No you are not a total killjoy. I feel exactly the same.

As for Halloween - this was never celebrated in the UK years ago now suddenly it's a big occasion with all the sales hype in the shops and even special clothes being manufactured for children.

Even Christmas starts at the beginning of September.

I'm fed up too but the answer has always seemed simple to me...take the BANG out of them.
The irresponsible idiots who let them off willy nilly wouldn't bother if thet were just pretty & quiet. Small children hate the noise, not to mention the poor animals...I hate to think how much wildlife is frightened to death by these 'explosions'.

A few years back my very elderly mother was in a dreadful state and phoned the police as she thought people were shooting at the bottom of her garden. It was just someone's birthday party.Fireworks on 5h November arefine and a good public firework display to mark a special event (preferable only the Millennium) is also enjoyable. Personally I don't think they should be sold to the general public at all.

Noisy fireworks are distressing to the very old and the very young and, as Robinia says, is totally unacceptable for those who love wildlife and animals.
Right so now we want to pass legislation because a 400 year old tradition is upsetting pet owners?

I wouldn't mind so much if the petition was to restrict the setting off of fireworks to certain days.

yes some people are irresponsible with fireworks but some people are irresponsible with pets.

I think we should ban dog ownership from all the dog muck I have to clear from my parking area!

Where's that petition site?
Christmas.

Noooooo.
Jake, it hasn't been tradition for 400 years to have firework displays going on all year round and that is what people are objecting about. It's not just pet owners that are concerned. It is greatly affecting wildlife and a lot of elderly people. Fireworks can be great if you are prepared for them, but when they go off unexpectly they can cause a great deal of damage.

I knew someone would get at pet owners! It always happens.
Gromit. Snap.

Like Bigmamma we have them all year round as all the cruise liners now have a gala dinner and firework display on the night they depart. They are so huge they go off from a barge in the middle of Southampton Water! Mind you it does make a nice display.
Fireworks have been a tradition and that's what you want to ban.

And I hardly think that fireworks night is the biggest issue affecting the elderly and wildlife in this country is it?

Like I said it's not like you're asking to just restrict the days in that petition is it?

No you want a ban!

Jake the petition is not against fireworks. Just against the irresponsible people who let fireworks off for no good reason. Australia banned firework sales to Joe Public and only allow organised displays. It is working well there. It seems strange that you can't buy a rememberance poppy
with a pin in case you prick yourself (health and safety) but you can buy enough gunpowder to blow yourself up in the form of fireworks
No only a ban for sale to the general public.
