Well it seems that all unlicensed people are irresponsible by your definition

I'm irresponsible then am I? - I'm not licensed
Well said AnnLinda. Like I said in another post, the general public can't buy a lot of dangerous things for health and safety reasons and yet can easily access fireworks and use them wherever they like.
I quite like the amazing displays from fireworks, but the noise from some of them really did make me jump, 'specially last night!

However, our kitten Milly happilly sat on the window sill enjoying watching them & didn't seem bothered by the noise - no doubt she will be as she gets older tho'!
Like vicious dogs for example?
oh, my post just flew off somewhere....and without a sound! :o)

It's the sheer size & force of those available to Joe Public that amazes me.
Jake, there are a lot of things I an unable to do because the law says so. The law is there to protect. I cannot have a gun in the house without a licence, and I cannot buy certain toxic substances, or non prescription drugs, etc. I am responsible but I can't do these things. You are responsible and you can't do these things either. The law is there however to protect responsible people from those that aren't like you and I and unfortunately we have to bear the consequences. I feel that it would be better for all of us if fireworks could only be sold to licenced people, for our own protection.
and if you must keep on about dogs Jake, as a dog owner I would be pleased to pay a substantial licence fee. A hefty licence fee might deter people from keeping dangerous dogs. This isn't an argument about dogs though.

I totally agree with you Lottie - well, with the exception of maybe selling Sparklers to people over the age of 18 for the little ones to hold, also assisted by an adult of course.
Annual deaths from fireworks?

Annual deaths from Smoking?

Annual deaths from Alcohol?

Come back when you've got a sense of proportion

That's more or less what I was indicating triggerhappy, but where do you draw the line?

Sparklers yes, but anything other than that should be more regulated.
Well yes Smudge, I must agree I wouldn't think it necessary to ban the public from buying sparklers :o).

I am not anti fireworks at all. I just think they should only be available to licenced people, and for use at notified events. The general public should be made aware when firework displays are to be held so that they are prepared.

Personally, I think adults enjoy fireworks more than a lot of little children (myself included)
*triggerhippy
Don't see that your annual deaths comments are relevant to the thread Jake. Sorry.

There are fireworks going off here as I type, least I think it's fireworks unless there are several bombs going off!!
I want them banned entirely cause I'm a mardy c0w, I don't like loud noises and crowds.

However I'm aware that laws can't be passed just because I'm grumpy.
I shall never forget when I was about 12 years old - Dad had made a huge bonfire & my older brothers treated us younger ones to some fireworks.

One of them pinned a Catherine Wheel onto the wooden washing post & as we oooo'd & aaaa'd at the pretty pattern, it flew off & landed straight in the box of fireworks 'safely' quite a few feet away, setting them all off one by one! We were rushed indoors by Mum, as there was nothing anyone could do, but watch them go up in fizzes & bangs!

We were all so disappointed, but think what the consequences could have been....
