Another site which shall remain nameless has started to require new users to pay 1p with a credit/debit card in order to have their real names and addresses just in case they are thinking of trollery.

Are there any other non-shopping sites which require this? Would it be a good idea if this site introduced this requirement too?

bibblebub - good idea in principle. But there will always be the loophole.
I thought it sounded a good idea for deterring trolls and spammers, although it may have put me off joining this site before I knew I could trust it- people may be worried about how secure their details are and whether their card details could be misused, and I'd have been put off by all that Verified by Visa stuff as I forget my password every time
That would bar all of those without a debit or credit card.

Doesn't everyone other than those using an internet café or a library have a bank account (and so a debit card at least) in order to pay their ISP?
People living at home with their parents, or in halls of residence, shared accommodation and so on...
I thought basic accounts didn't offer debit cards?

And no, I don't think it's a good idea.

that's true
my old man had never had a debit/credit card. Mind you that doesn't stop him using the internet for shopping !
If this is what the nameless site is doing I can't see them having many members.

How would it work? Would you need a separate card per name? Will they/can they check the card details against the address?
"How would it work? Would you need a separate card per name?"

Why would they need more than one name?

Will they/can they check the card details against the address?
Yes, address is one of the details that is generally checked in a card transaction.
Well in that case, lol.
i have a basic bank account and a debit card (rbs) x
What they going to do with thruppence??
they would need to set up secure processing and folk would need to agree to have their details stored which would need to be secure storage. This costs moolah...not sure if the Ed's pocket money would run to it?
I cant see many people signing over their personal details regardless of whether they are "good" or not, however if the site in question was well moderated and generally a good site that people feel they can trust I can see people signing up still.

A lot of sites offer paypal payments options as well

Lottie...this is what was posted on there.

/.Please be patient we are update our systems to deal with internet "trolls".

Once live again you will be asked to re register your details providing your full name, address, postcode and date of birth and pay £0.01 with a credit or debit card to verify your identity.

This way we can keep SAB a safe environment and pass details of anyone immediately to the relevant authority.

This is in the SAB community best interests, we are sure you will agree./
