I looked on Internet for advice on sending gifts and seems people often get charged duty so a plant delivered locally may be best

Jennykenny and atalanta's suggestions come close to what I have in mind. Send your friend something that can be eaten, or drunk, or loses its purpose after a while. If you send something that has a permanent nature (glassware, pottery, for example), and your friend doesn't like it, it's always going to be there. But if you send something that has a transient nature, and they don't like it, it will soon be gone (eaten, or drunk, or whatever). After all, it's the thought, not the gift, that counts.
