If something is stamped (for instance a pair of cufflinks) with the word Gilt, does that mean that it's silver coated with gold?

Not necessarily. The actual metal the cufflinks are made from has no bearing on the gilt stamp. It is meant to indicate that it is coated with gold though, although this can be debated as it may also be a cheap gold coated alloy.

With all the custom jewellery on the market one can never be sure what one is getting unless it comes from a reputable Jeweler.

Thank you wildwood. That's a great help. I want to sell something and I was wondering whether to say Gilt or SIlver Gilt. It's a vintage item and does seem rather good quality. I wouldn't want to mislead.

It won't do any harm to say that it is stamped gilt.

If you think it is reasonably valuable take it to a jeweler for a rough estimate, should only cost a couple of quid, if that.
If say more than 100, get a proper valuation done. The cost for this can vary a lot so ask first.

While you wouldn't wont to rip anybody off, at the same time you wouldn't want to sell it too cheap.
