Well I doubt there's anything you can do. No shop will remove it, as they will assume you're a shoplifter.

I had the same experience with River Island. I had the bag, but not the receipt, they did remove the tag eventually, but treated me as though I was a criminal. I felt so embarassed, yet I'd done nothing wrong.
You can get it off with a pair of pliers. I had to do this recently when I had bought a top for my holidays and didn't realise until I got there that the tag had been left on!

They come off quite easily if you get at them the right way, and they aren't filled with stain or dye if you break them!
freeze the item first before trying to mess with it, but if u paid on a credit or debit card your statement should surfice, if you ring the stiores cust service line fiorst and explain they will usually be fine about it, it is the stores error and a real thrif would not make a fuss as they would know full well how to remove the tag
try using magnets to get it off, a lot of security tags are taken off in shops using strong magnets so that might help you. But i would be careful about trying to break them off with pliers or anything as some tags can be full of dye and therefore you'll end up with a ruined pair of trousers! x
