I am extremely pleased to see that Denbigh High School has won the case against a muslim girl who wanted to wear muslim dress to school. Schools have dress codes and all pupils must adhere to them.

My 12 year old daughter was recently reprimanded at school for wearing a coat with fur on the collar which apparantly is against the dress rules. Yes its silly and petty but if that's what the rules are then she must stick to them. So what gives someone else the right to think that she can wear clothes which contravene her school's dress code.

The difference here though is that my daughter is unable to complain of racial or religious discrimination because unfortunately in Britain today she is a white, British and nominally Christian.

Excellent news Roger - perhaps the staff at Denbigh High School can now get on with what they're supposed to be doing - without this unnecessary issue hanging over them!

Our Granddaughter has to have her school tie hanging at a certain length - now if she can abide by the rules, why can't other's?!!!!

I don't know if they should get too jubilant though, they will probably appeal. But I think its great though, for once the immigrants haven't got their own way, they must remember they are in a foreign land and must stick to OUR rules, not the ones from where they came.

They probably will appeal & if they lose again, they'll only find something else to buck against the rules - only to be dealt with at the tax payer's expense!

Its not a race or immigrant issue its a religious issue - depressing to see it being hijacked in this way (and I agree with the school).

Definitely a victory for common sense, I was made to take a crucifix off, not that I was wearing it for religious purposes (It was the fashion in the 80's!!). And we were constantly being told off about our hair, make up, jewellery etc as are all kids desperately trying to be individual in school.

However, most kids like school uniform, because it's main purpose is as a leveller. It stops people being different, to a point it hides your background so that all kids can be treated on a level pegging. I know life isn't this Rosy, but you have to draw the line somewhere and this is absolutely the right decision.

Along the same vein, should Jewish kids be barred for wearing the kippah (skull cap)? I mean, it's part of the Jewish faith, isn't it? And this is about religion.

Oh, and she's not an immigrant madein1978. She's British born. If we all went back to where our parents came from the country would be bankrupt within weeks.

I agree and support the final decision (of the school) that was reached. But there is no need for some people to act like a war of religion has been won... it was just one misguided teenage girl, and just her, not the whole school that demanded to be given special rights. So lets not get carried away and make it into another religion debate.

Don't forget that the school still allows muslim girls to wear a uniform that complies with all the laws of Islam - it's only the complete coverall - jilbab.
Moslem dress has not been banned, nor should it.

I am a committed Christian who will admit to having a bit of a problem with Islam.
I still feel that all religions should be allowed to keep the laws of their faith.

I for one would never suggest that a religious war has been won - in fact, I don't think anyone is, I agree that girls should be allowed to wear scarfs and the boys kippah's, but the jibab shouldn't be allowed. I wouldn't make a Jew eat pork, nor a vegetarian eat beef, there is a difference between being accepting of a religion or belief and changing the world to accommodate it.

Btw rogerthomas, if it was real fur on your daughters coat, imho, she shouldn't have been wearing it anyway. I hate this fashion turn around that everyone seems to have forgotten how horrendous the fur trade is, and completely unnecessary.

Agreed Englishbird, although I think some people are turning it into a "us vs. them" debate and bringing the immigrants into it. I think its more obvious in the other thread below (or above about the same topic) ... so my earlier post may have been in the wrong place...

I personally hate the idea of school uniform and don't subscribe to the idea that it makes everyone the same. It does not. The poor kids just wear the richer kids cast offs and it's even more embarassing for them, not to mention the huge financial strain it places on low income parents. I was so incensed with the petty twaddle about uniform at my sons school several years ago that I ended up withdrawing all of my children and going the Education Otherwise route. I think to pull people up about their personal choice of dress is terrible and to cause conflict about religious dress is dreadful.That would end up with Sikhs being unable to wear turbans, Jews Kippurs and so it goes on. Why are we incapable of tolerating and understanding our diversity without everything becoming a war? It should be anyone's own business what they wear and no-one else's what harm was the girl doing other than denting the School's ego?
