I find it difficult to admire the Queen. All her life she has been looked after to the highest possible standards in all areas, she has done a good job but so have millions of other people, she does not know what it is to be in a queue, wait for service or worry if her children will find a job. She has people to arrange the smallest details in her trips and plenty of people to fawn over her. I believe a person doing a job they may dislike to maintain a family because it is their duty is more deserving.
I know if we had a President they would receive all the advantages now afforded to the Queen but at least we could change them every few years.
Considering at least 30 million people would rate as her as somewhere beteween a nothing and a parasite then yes, you'd admire anyone who went through life with that kind of unpopularity.
At the end of the day the Royal Palaces housing the Royal family and the history they are attached to bring in millions of pounds in tourism and the fact that we have a Royal Family still living in those buildings, unlike other countries whose monarchies have gone to the wall, only enhances the visits of overseas tourists many of whom respect our Queen more than some of our fellow countrymen. The tourists also love the pomp and ceremony associated with our heritage and I for one, don't knock it.
I think the Queen does a great job. (A pity some of her offsprings don't follow her example).
I didn't say *all* Aussies/Kiwis/Cannucks hold her in disdain......I was replying to DTC who had concentrated solely on UK statistics to 'correct' Prudie.
Agree with you parkdale. She is held in great affection all over the world by many people and brings in shed loads of money via tourism. But I wouldn't want her job for the world.
DT my maths won't be off but my facts are - I just guessed that it would be half the population so just took an approx figure - no hyperbole intended. I'm surprised you say that only 13% are anti-monarchy. Three years on AB and I would say the number of anti-royalists I've seen posting is way over 13%.
I admire her tenacity and stamina, certainly - and she doesn't suffer fools gladly, so I don't think she'd allow people to fawn over her. She uses Tupperware, turns out lights, and does her own barbecuing ..unlike her son Charles, who has someone to run his bath and put toothpaste on his brush, if rumour is to be believed.
