Is this a newly coined phrase? I've heard it used in an American TV show and lately on a local one.

Must be pretty recent as it's in the Urban Dictionary

Although someone asked the same question as you- back in the day in 2005

Back in the day language didn't seem to evolve so quickly. :-)

It's been about more than 8 years and I'm only noticing it now. We must be in a backwood here.
Its about the same as we say '' when I was a lad ''
It's been used in this way since the 60s, see here, http://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2012/09/back-in-the-day-2.html
I was going to say the same as trt......when I was a lad (not me personally and I have the appendages to prove it)
Does this variant from 1975 count?

Been used here in the colonies for about 20 years or so, I suppose…

For a fairly good accounting of its origins, see here:

Years ago, when I was younger I used "back in the day" to mean years ago, when I was younger back in the day years ago.
It comes from the series The Wire and people use it to sound cool (!).
