just read about this, ok its in prison, who cares about them, well i do. if this is the growing trend inside a prison then what is our country as a whole going to be like in 10 years time. sharia law courts being introduced. jihadists are becoming more and more popular. they will make the troubles in belfast, northern ireland and uk look like a walk in the park. mass immigration , no jobs , NHS is in deep trouble. obamacare in the USA.
what is going to become of our country ? i really do fear for my childrens future. its scary !!! the world is changing so fast and not for the better.
im just waiting on some idiot replying that immigration is good for our country tut tut .
UKIP getting my next vote for sure !!!

You know, too, that many people convert while in jail, due to the influence of others (they say). It's a scary picture, I'm not defending anything. I'd feel the same if the allegation had been "42% Rastafarian".
Even though Muslims might be as a whole more likely to commit crime than non-Muslims, the absolute figures are rather more significant. There are 11,729 prisoners in the UK who are Muslim as of 2013. In the 2011 Census there were 2,706,066 self-identified Muslims (http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/about-ons/business-transparency/freedom-of-information/what-can-i-request/previous-foi-requests/people-and-places/statistics-of-the-muslim-population-in-the-uk-for-2011--2012-and-2013/index.html ). It's not possible to compare these figures perfectly due to the two-year discrepancy (and I think the prison population figure may include Scotland) , but the population of Muslims will only have increased since 2011, so the facts are that no more than 0.5% of all Muslims in the UK are in prison, and so at least 99.5% are not. So an exclusion from people coming to this country based solely on their religion being Islam would be grossly unfair and discriminatory, and would twist the facts for more than the more sensible policy of focusing on individuals rather than religious groupings.
So yes, it is an utterly abhorrent suggestion to bar all Muslims from coming to this country because they might be potential criminals. The evidence is overwhelmingly against that.

eccles, my wife is thai bhuddist. law abidding, tolerant, blends in with everyone else, hard working, was married to myself a british citizen, we have a daughter together born here in uk with uk passport. what i am talking about is families ( who do not have any connection with uk british citizens ) who come to beg , steal, rob , create trouble, wage jihad the list is endless. yes immigration is ok to a certain extent, i dont mean that because it suited me in the past , WE HAVE TO DRAW A LINE !! times are only getting harder and i cannot see it getting any easier in the near future, i know that and i know that most of you know it too unless your just plain down right ignorant or soft in the head.
i was in prison years ago for fighting back against the ira murdering scum who killed countless numbers of children and innocent people in my country including 2 of my family members. dont come off with that tripe to me hc4 .
what would you have done ....sat on it ? yea i suppose !!! but hey thats a different story altogether. im talking about the spread of islamic jihadists

Massaging the figures doesn't detract from the reality.
//Muslims represent only 4.7 per cent of the population in England and Wales, according to the most recent Census, yet one in seven prisoners (14 per cent) in England and Wales is a Muslim//

I'm not doing any massaging whatsoever, or at least not intentionally. And for that matter I'm not trying to refute the suggestion that Muslims commit crime disproportionately to their population. But it's a long distance between that (which seems a reasonable claim on the face of it, though you'd also need to establish a causal link or rule out other factors such as culture) -- a long distance between that, then, and Ratter's suggestion of stopping Muslims from entering our country. That would certainly be going too far. Because, in the end, the figures show that, like most of us, the vast majority of Muslims are law-abiding citizens.
I'm criticising the gross overreaction rather than anything else.

Yes, fair enough. Taking the figures above from your link, it would appear that Muslims are more than twice as likely to commit crime and then be sent to jail than non-Muslims. Why that is I don't know, but there are a number of links along the way that would need to be considered. Among them would be cultural differences -- after all, a first-generation Pakistani Sunni Muslim and a third-generation Sufi Muslim with Turkish origins ought to be considered as separate groups, I'd have thought. And then there are Muslim converts with a fully White British ethnic origin.
With such variety and with so many other factors to consider, it's hard to see the "more than twice as likely to commit crime" statistic as being more than just a correlation -- that is, that the religion is the only contributing factor to this statistic.
That the religion is not likely to be the sole causal factor, and that anyway most Muslims don't commit crime, mean that the knee-jerk response of banning Muslims from entering the country is a gross overreaction and should surely be recognised as such. It should be possible to debate this issue in a more sensible way -- and it shouldn't be unreasonable to criticise such a response as Ratter's for what it is: irrational and inflammatory.
