Just listened to the Deputy Maire of Calais (Channel 4 news) agreeing with Britain's stance that, essentially, 'enough is enough'. Are we seeing the beginnings of a new 'Entente Cordiale'?

Perhaps I should add that the potential immigrants are from non-EU countries, but that because they have managed to get through the EU and are living there they are presumably currently at least temporary EU citizens. It's all very complicated - perhaps I should withdraw the post, or at least the title. Sorry, folks. Question of new'Entente' stands.

I did apologise for a badly-phrased question, Methyl. Yes, these people are 'illegals' - but they are currently living in France and France has a huge problem with them. The main thrust was that at long last there seems to be some French co-operation/understanding with the British point of view instead of them just blaming us for the problem.
They may be doing that soon, fender.

No they are not, jourdain. They are illegal immigrants who have no right of abode in any EU country. The problem is that having gained entry to the EU they are free (courtesy of the ridiculous Schengen agreement) to roam across mainland Europe as internal borders in that area have been abandoned. So you have the situation where migrants are "welcomed" into southern Italy (who have a programme called "Mare Nostrum" which is designed to rescue boatloads of migrants heading north from north Africa) and then quickly usher them across the border into France.

No they would not, methyl. Those arriving here illegally do not die of starvation. They are provided with shelter (often in agreeable seaside hotels), food, pocket money and health checks. Unlike in France, they are not left to die on the streets. If we opened the border to such people (instead of forcing them to arrive here in shipping containers or contained within lorry cargoes) they would be treated no differently.
As tonyav has pointed out, Italy’s “Mare Nostrum” exercise is due to end shortly. However, do not hold your breath. There is no way on earth that they will allow boatloads of migrants to drown and there is also no way they will be towed back to north Africa.

Although the UK’s generous benefits system does not help, it is not our fault they are there. Italy should confine these people to their territory and either allow them to apply for asylum there (the first safe country they reach, as per the rules) or arrange for them to be shipped back whence they came.

We should not be content to desist from offering search and rescue help. We should use military personnel to attack these "boat people". after all, if we want to discourage them from attempting the crossing I would have thought a few torpedoes/missiles or some heavy machine gunning should do it.

Good try. Last year more than 2 million lorries used the Dover -Calais link. Without those lorries vital imports to the UK would be severely compromised. Where do those lorries go under your “single freight route” plan?
The fact that the UK has a generous benefits system is not the issue (though, as I have said, it does nothing to help.). Mainland Europe is under invasion from these people and recent events in Calais (mass incursions to restricted areas, migrants storming ships and having to be repelled with hoses, etc.) demonstrates that the UK is similarly under threat. To lay the blame on our benefits system is malicious. We should not have to adjust our systems because they are so attractive to foreigners. They should be prevented from getting here by whatever means is necessary and those who do arrive from France should be returned there forthwith.
