If feeding the hungry were the purpose, food can be obtained (from Sainsbury’s or elsewhere) at any time of the year without the requirement for ritual. This isn’t about feeding the hungry – it’s about the feeders fervently hoping that Allah is ticking his check list of their personal achievements.
When I worked in Saudi in the early 80s we caught some of our Saudi fire crew slaughtering a goat in the back of one of the ambulances at the fire station. When we had a go at them they didn't seem to think they were doing anthing wrong. This to was for Eid. We did get them to put a stop to the practice afterwards and they went to the other side of the airport to do it at other times.
