Do you think we are a compassionate society, given the number and demand for food banks?
Kids go to bed hungry?
People on hard times have benefits stalled or stopped for superfluous reasons, sometimes resulting in eviction?
Army veterans, in spite of the British Legion and SAAFA, find themselves facing hardship and the governments promises to a military promise is just a sad memory?
We all had to bail out the bankers, and the CEO of Persimmons just got a £75,000,000 bonus.
The numerous questions should be obvious by now!

Naomi - I see you in a different light. Sad.
/// Poverty doesn't equate to hunger. ///

I give up - none so blind as those who won't see.
Theland, the light you see me in is of no consequence. We live in one of the most considerate societies on the planet. How many of those parents who are failing to feed their children are still buying their cigarettes, and drugs, and booze? If parents are failing to feed their children, blame the parents.

Wake up, Theland .... and Canary.
You have to know the the family story. If a parent drinks or smokes then their priorities are wrong.

Canary - You have a heart of flesh, not stone.
Remember David Cameron talking about the " Military Contract?" The promise to the vets?
Please keep on posting.
The people I really feel sorry for are the ones in work and by the time they've paid their mortgage/rent and bills they have very little left.

I've been in that position. My kids didn't go hungry but I skipped meals.

Naomi - Job centres have targets to suspend benefits for all kinds of trivia, and then claimants on Universal Credit get NOTHING for weeks. Even with kids!
/// We live in one of the most considerate societies on the planet. ...
Wake up ...Canary.///

Naomi, you didn't even read the headline in my first link. For your enlightment it reads "4 million children live in poverty in the UK, one of the worst rates in the industrialised world". My italics.
Theland, For all kinds of trivia like not following the rules. I know - I've heard about the lame ducks who don't do what's required and then bemoan their lot when the rules kick in.
" "4 million children live in poverty in the UK, one of the worst rates in the industrialised world". "
Why don't they quote their sources for this figure?
How many of those parents who are failing to feed their children are still buying their cigarettes, and drugs, and booze?

I give up. How many?
Canary, I read the whole lot and I repeat, poverty does not equate to hunger. Look up today's definition of poverty.
jno, ask Theland. He knows all about it.
That's a bit harsh Naomi.

People have had benefits stopped because they're in hospital and can't attend the job centre.
Question Author
Ummm - I understand. Workers bailing out the bankers, and shouldering the burden of us all.
I admire you.
My family have similar stories.
I, like you, do my bit. A few direct debits to charity, money in the boxes, donating to the food banks, and the Big Issue seller. Can't do more, wish I could.
But Ummm I know from years on here you are a very compassionate lady.
There has to be some confusion or a lack of communication involved there, ummmm.
Question Author
Naomi - when my son was unemployed, his benefits were stopped for three weeks for writing his job search efforts on the wrong paper. Honestly.
Naomi, at times the system is in chaos - not least during any change over or alteration in circumstances.

Of course some do get sanctioned by not keeping their side of the bargain too, but the glaring muck ups (to be polite) are steadily getting worse.

Flexibility equals compassion to some extent.
Theland's usual piety has raised its head again - together with his politics of envy. Time for bed for me. Night night all.
