Signs Of Much Greater Importance
305 Answers
When Jesus Christ was on earth, he gave his listeners a lesson in observing signs and acting accordingly. He was talking about something of far-reaching importance. The Bible reports: “The Pharisees and Sadducees approached him and, to tempt him, they asked him to display to them a sign from heaven. In reply he said to them: ‘When evening falls you are accustomed to say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is fire-red”; and at morning, “It will be wintry, rainy weather today, for the sky is fire-red, but gloomy-looking.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but the signs of the times you cannot interpret.’”—Matthew 16:1-3

“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know.”—John 4:22.
I have said before all are inclined to worship someone or something, even if it is to worship one’s own self. The person who sourly says, “I do not worship anybody or anything!” is really a worshiper of himself. He makes himself a human god, but due to his egotism he is unaware of that fact. He prides himself in the presumptuous idea that he gives worship to nothing whether alive or lifeless.
Because we know it is God’s Word. Our studies include reviews of the acts of faith and fearlessness of the servants of God in ages past, and they believe that the same God who did wondrous works then is the same one we know and serve today. “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.”—Ps. 48:14

Theland@ No. Jesus said in a prayer to his Father: “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God.” (John 17:3) The same apostle who recorded those words of Jesus also wrote: “We know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us intellectual capacity that we may gain the knowledge of the true one [Jehovah]. And we are in union with the true one, by means of his Son Jesus Christ.1 John 5:20
Khandro, //I once quoted Plato & was told I should "think for myself"// he said innocently.
What a wag you are! Truth is Khandro, you say little but you quote other people continually.
I’ve watched the video - why I’m not entirely sure. Am I to assume that Melanie Phillips speaks for you now? If so, what point are you trying to make?
Theland, you’ve skipped my question but no doubt you’re aware of that.
Atheist, I think Revelation was written under the influence of magic mushrooms.

Thanks, theland... but neither of those are answers. One is "because I say so" and one is "because someone else says so".
Khandro, all philosophy starts from scratch. Presumably you don't believe something, just because somebody else said it- however long ago?
And, although you weren't asking me directly.... as an atheist, I am not the slightest bit obsessed or even interested in any gods. Only in people, because they are real. Whenever somebody posts something particularly irrational, nonsensical, or just unknown or unproven, I am interested in why they choose to believe it. It doesn't matter what the subject is at all... just why are people so illogical?

goodlife; Thank you, I asked because the other evening as a respite from the coronavirus we were watching an episode of 'Valhalla Murders' on Netfix, (don't bother really) & part of the plot took place at a funeral service in an ultra-modern looking church in Iceland & the pastor, during a eulogy spoke of, coming to confession, I wondered what sort of church it was & if it was JW, but it may, now you say, have been Mormon, or maybe Iceland has its own denomination, it definitely wasn't RC.
naomi; I wish I was as articulate & clear-sighted as M.P. she doesn't speak for me, but I agree whole-heartedly with what she says, in fact I can't think of anything I would wish disagree with.

I don't have a degree, or need one, khandro. Any of your own thoughts and beliefs, even if they don't originate from yourself, have to pass your own criteria to be valid. So, there is never a need to refer to somebody else's opinions, as you will only agree if you have already thought of it yourself. There is nothing original, however old, that thousands of people haven't already considered for themselves. To be anywhere near convincing (and to theland, too) just explain your own thoughts in your own words. People living hundreds of years ago, know nothing more than you do.
naomi;//Khandro, why did you ask me to watch it?//
If you think listening to Melanie Phillip's take on the changes within society since WWII & her reasoning on the secularisation within it, was a wasted 13 minutes, then I apologise for suggesting it.
Though, if this is in fact the case, it gives me certain food for thought.
