How Would You Handle This Scenario.
91 Answers
This is a true event that happened in the 70s.
You are a Constable walking your beat when you are directed by your station officer via telephone to a nearby building site where the foreman has reported a disturbance. You have no radio in those days.
On attending the site gate you are met by the foreman who informs you that two of his contractors have discovered a subbie has possession of a quantity of their tools which went missing a few weeks previously when the subbie was last on site.
In case anyone is unaware it is a heinous crime within the building trade to steal the tools of a man's trade. Even bailiffs are forbidden by law to confiscate a man's chattels or tools of a artisans trade.
You inform the foreman you will take a short walk around the block and return in five minutes.
On returning you are directed and accompanied by the foreman to the roof of the multi storey car park under construction. There are three men. Two looking a little sheepish on your arrival and one slightly bruised with a nose bleed.
We have an allegation of theft and an obvious assault in this scenario.
You do not have all day or the luxury of sitting by your computer to make your decision and ponder your course of action.
How would you deal with it? Feel free to ask pertinent questions relating to the scenario and I will tell how it was dealt with later

retro, this reminds me of the wisdom of Soloman! Taking 5 minutes out means you let the 3 who are aggrieved have time to re-consider their present positions. Presumably the 2 who had tools stolen by the 3rd person have recovered their belongings. The 3rd person has got a bloodied nose (no doubt having tripped over something on the floor and hit the deck) but no...

Playing by the book would have been to press charges before anyone was assaulted. You allowed them to be assaulted, dismissed and able to be nicked by somebody else with no history.
If they had been charged then they could stop stealing. Other people would not have been stolen. Those people who has been would get their property back. And nobody would have been assaulted.
Instead, you went along with somebody else's summarily justice of an assault. The thief had a chance to steal again, with no history. And, luckily, nobody was seriously injured or killed, but may have been, with your implicit sanction to assault somebody - which is a crime.
This was (I hope not still) the problem with the police - thinking they knew better. Maybe some did, but not all, and not every time.

I'm sure they will be many and interesting. I often read the happenings during Jourdain's long and distinguished career in teaching.
Quite appalling some of her descriptions of the treatment and assaults she experienced by students especially her time teaching in a Bradford School.
Crack on Tilly. Love to hear your experiences. My BIL was a teacher in Canning town in the East end of London. After two years of teaching there the poor chap cracked up with a mental breakdown. He still suffers today. Not an easy job it would seem.

Very true. Me. I described I had no radio to call for back up. I was alone. Discretion is the better part of valour. I also stated that I had not the luxury of sitting all day deliberating on the computer on how best to deal with the situation presented to me at the time. If I had gone in all guns blazing with intent to arrest all three I probably would be demonstrating Newton's law of gravity from the car park roof. I considered keeping my cool was a better option rather than being hot headed and using the power to incarcerate people when other means were available and I lived to tell the tale.

//Please don’t Tilly. I have no doubt you have more to do than ‘ live in the past ‘.//
Why shouldn't Tilly tell us of her experiences in teaching a.a.
So sorry asquith that I didn't rise to your bait earlier about the ethnicity of the participants. I noticed you failed to answer Naomis question . Why did you believe it pertinent? I answered your question but you failed to answer naomis. I can ask again Why do think it was pertinent?.

//Before the assault, there was only one to charge - the thief.
After the assault, there were five to be charged. The thief, the two contractors, the foreman and the constable .//.
Lol. Real little firebrand aren't you. Mr Michael Winner commemorated a memorial specially for officers who may choose your course of action. Hey Ho. You probably have never walked in a police officers footsteps.
Retrocop turns out to be the hero of his own story.
What a surprise.
When I was offered this ludicrous 'challenge' last night, Retrocop was labouring under the illusion that some AB'ers were fascinated enough to 'adjudicate' my story versus his!
He seems to have abandoned that particular piece of self-agrandaising nonsense in the cold light of day.
Just as well, it saves him from the embarrassing truth that the community at large are utterly indifferent to his nonsensical nostalgia trips, and his sad need to be judged as wonderful by the rest of us.
Never mind, all done now.

It would seem that Ellipsis would advocate the modern day policing methods. This is not the way to go but she obviously would approve.
