the germans were the enemy in ww2 and we didnt have to discriminate about who was a bad one and who wasnt, we just had to kill as many as possible for the sake of freedom,

Helpmetoo, you are extremely ignorant. Of course the allies distinguished between 'good' and 'bad' Germans. If the object were simply to destroy as many Germans as possible, how come Dresden is a stand out autrocity? If your logic were correct, it would be indistinguishable from a whole host of other attacks on civilian populations. If your point is 'when they're pointing a gun at you, you don't differntiate' then I truly dispair. In other news, Pope turns out to be Catholic, bears poop in woods, sky revealed as blue.

To answer the question more generally, I'm sorry, but how is this latest autrocity markedly more barbaric than when al Qaeda flew planes into the World Trade Centre? It isn't. It's equally barbaric, and anyone who thinks this indicates a particular lowering of moral standards seems to have missed how apalling 9/11 was in the first place.

i think ya got me wrong waldo,9/11 was evil beyond anything i no even find words to descibe it.,for me this is more personel.most people even those with just mil of humanity who have special needs children have that thread that ties, understanding compassion you can to a degree walk in the others footsteps,as a parent.even the most fundermentaslist muslim has those feelings or so i thought..but i realize i was wrong.they just disposable assets and now they think women and the disavantaged are going to be used as suicide bombers.people can horrify shock sadden you as 9/11 did but i can't find the right word to descibe these cowards other than revolting.the 9/11 killers had a choise.something these girls never had...usually a muslim cleric or whatever comes on to the media condeming acts of barbery,they been quiet this time..,do they not feel any shame on there muslim brothers this is a worry ...someone gotta stand up for these voiceless nameless ones cos they just the first of many yet to come.these innocents are gonna be used as weapons to kill many (sorry i dyslexic)

Speer said 5 more Dresdens and the war is lost, it was awful what happened (our Russian allies asked us to bomb it as they thought reinforcements were coming through there) but it was part of a bombing stategy employed by both sides. One that is still used today, remember the "ethical" Robin Cook and Serbia? For a true perspective on the area bombing campaign read Churchill's speech "Growing Confidence" 1941. I in all honesty don't for one minute think we should criticise our forebears in WW2, they did what had to be done in order to win, if you still lack perspective (it's not hard to look up) see what Hitler had planned for Stalingrad when he captured it. His plans for the whole of Russia, whilst you're at it.
What worries me is the language on the fringes of both sides lead towards another "final solution" Islamic fundamentalism is just a new form of fascism, substitute "kuffar" for "jew" and "muslim" for "aryan" and in effect you have Nazism. In the same manner conspiracy theorists and their "Illuminati" is just anti-semitisms' new clothes.
To deny others their humanity (of whatever viewpoint) is wrong, judge the deed not the creed.

The interesting thing about viewing carpet bombing as a war crime is that it was the central plank of Gorrings' defence against the accusations surrounding the holocaust, in so much as the bombs (the 'A' bomb in particular) did'nt discriminate against women and children nor did the gas chambers. Bombs are'nt that much more accurate now than they were then, we still miss with alarming regularity, remember the Belgrade commuter train? The bombing of cities like Warsaw, Liverpool, Coventry and Dresden etc are acts of war. Civilians die in wars (sadly they always have) but when civilians become a prime target rather than a collateral target it becomes abhorent, sucha the strafeing of civilian refugees in Poland, France and Belgium or even the bombing of Rotterdam when the I.R.A blew up Warrington I viewed it as a crime, when they killed soldiers I viewed it as attrition.
The war we're in now is different we are not fighting a sovreign country, but an ideology it's through fear in the civilian populous that they seek to win. We can't even negotiate a settlement with them, Spain has apparently intercepted another terrorist cell.
