Why do people put memorials at the side of the road?

Why do people put memorials at the side of the road for road accident victims? Why do the tributes involve football shirts?

I don't think anything anyone puts on a loved one's grave is inappropriate, everything has it's own personal memories and meaning for the bereaved , D's sister has put a 12"wicker penguin on his grave and noone knows why but she has and she knows why.

You obviously haven't seen some of the stuff on graves in certain Blackpool cemetaries dot.I'm no prude by any stretch of the imagination...but there is a time and a place for plastic boobs,vibrators and other stuff of that ilk.......placing these things on a grave(no matter what the significance to the person doing so) is offensive,inappropriate and actually a bit sick!
