Premonitions
91 Answers
Have you or do you have premonitions? I have since a child and they seem to be more prolific as I get older. Many times I've thought of something happening before the event and it's turned out exactly as I'd thought of it (does this indicate that the future is there already...?). I never take these "premonitions/thoughts" for granted and most times are shocked that they come about.
Some time ago one was awful as on the Saturday I mentioned to OH that someone we knew of but to do with our friend was going to pass away and it was so strong a feeling I wrote it in my diary. Didn't think too much about it but the following Thursday I had a phone call to say her sister had literally dropped down dead as she was walking to catch the bus. Her sister wasn't ill nor was there any concern for her health and she wasn't elderly either. This is one of many things that have come true that I've thought of prior to it happening over the years. Do you think it's coincidence or something that can't be explained?

Have to agree with you grasscarp, it isn't something one looks for or is predicting, it just happens as I can vouch for many years. Too many things to list but.....talking about lottery! One night I dreamt we had won a very large amount of money and it we weren't going mad over it in the dream, just accepted it. I actually saw each number and I knew I should wake up and write these numbers down, however, still in my dream I said to myself, they are so vivid I KNOW I will remember them in the morning. All this was in my dream....however when I did wake up I only remembered a couple of the numbers so obviously that was that, just wish I had woken up when I thought about it and written the numbers down. Now it didn't come true (unfortunately) but one wonders if it would have if I'd had remembered the numbers from the dream. Not a premonition of course but interesting and annoying to me at the time lol.
It's just so random isn't it....perhaps if people could conjure up what they want there would be more bad done with it than good....so we have to take what we "know" and deal with it I guess. Once I was making a cardigan for my mother inlaw for Christmas, sat on the sofa just completing it when an overwhelming sadness overcame me. I immediately said to my OH, this is the last Christmas present we will be giving your mother...asked why I said that I couldn't explain but just "knew" it. She wasn't ill or ailing....but two weeks later she died.... I find it all difficult to accept even though it's happened to me lots I still wonder why and how it happens.
I had a good friend, who is now no longer with us thanks to cancer. He was in the far east in a shop selling silk scarves, and was about to buy one for a lady he knew in the uk. He then just got this feeling not to buy it and walked out of the shop. When he got back to uk he found that she had died during his trip. There are premonitions, and ESP and loads of other things that give us an understanding of events beyond the easily explainable.
This is going to be my final comment for the night as I've got other things to do before I head for me bed.
But, a couple of nights (or was it the day previously. Not sure!) before my wonderful dad died from prostate cancer in 2007, I went to his bedroom and he had his door open slightly ajar, and he was sat up in his bed reading a book.
I thought about having a nice chat with him before I went to bed.He told me quite a few memorable things of the past, and also said that the mortgage of our bungalow was all paid for,and is now in my name.He also talked about his Will and testament.I will never forget that wonderful night.
He sadly passed away in his sleep more or less, with my mum sitting next to him.She was the last person he saw. He looked so at peace when I saw him next morning.I could usually suppress myself from crying, but my emotions were so strong I couldn't suppress my feelings any longer.I literally cried buckets and my mum hugged me and she started crying too.
He was such a wonderful dad to have.We still miss him so much to this day!!

I know EXACTLY where you're coming from, right from when I could talk as a child I 'knew' things. When I was three, I patted my mother's stomach and told her there was an 'angel' inside her - she didn't even know she was pregnant at the time, when she found out for sure, she used to correct me and say, not an angel, a baby. The baby only survived for ten minutes after she was born, and i said see, she's an angel. I knew something dreadful had happened to my daughter when she had was involved in a very bad car accident. My mother didn't like me to tell her things, but my gran did - my gran put it down to me being the seventh son of a seventh son - I don't know where it comes from, I can be washing up thinking about what I want to listen to on the radio - and something will just come to me I'll be 80 next birthday and I don't question these things anymore - just thankful that it's saved us and our farm on more than one occasion.
I must say how interesting I have found these comments about things that are not 'normal' & the only thing I can throw into the conversation is this :-
You are all aware that there are sounds that animals can hear that we can not, there are things outside our vision that we cannot see ( some creatures for instance can see in infrared) this being so how can we possibly know what is around us that we are unaware of ? I do not mock anything in this life simply because it is unproven. Ron.

I would personally be sceptical of claims of premonition, as with any other paranormal, supernatural event.
No disrespect to the individuals concerned, but the evidence presented as supportive of such "powers" are always anecdotal, often from the past, and could just as easily be narratives of how the individual now remembers such things - or, bluntly, they could be made up.
I think it was the Carl Sagan who coined the phrase "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" - and there are few things more extraordinary to claim than premonitions, which implies a knowledge of the future, which in turn a pre-ordained, deterministic view - Not to mention the complete lack of any scientific hypothesis that could begin to adequately explain how such a thing might happen.

Have to agree there with you Ron, just as I've always thought, "more things to heaven and earth..." I don;'t think we are meant to know but are being teased lol...well something like that. Definitely more going on than meets the eye but an interesting subject with many opinions which are also interesting to read.
There is no deep dark mystery regarding premonitions. Premonitions are simply intuitions that just so happen to correlate is some fashion or other with subsequent events.
Precognition is a contradiction in terms. Until you know how it is you know what you believe you knew such claims of knowledge are devoid of that which lends any degree of legitimacy or certainty to such claims. Claims of possessing knowledge derived through unknown means from an unconfirmed source is nothing more than a declaration of ones own ignorance and that one is an unreliable witness to events, whether or not they have actually transpired.
Intuitions, like emotions, are often useful indicators of where to look for answers but they are not in or of themselves answers but indications of the need to ask more questions. It is only through an understanding of that on which ones knowledge is based that one can justify believing that one knows (or knew) anything at all or be relied upon to accurately recount their recollections of that for which they admittedly had no rational basis for believing with any degree of certainty.
All the same, please refrain from making any entries regarding me and some future dire event in your diary . . . thank you!

Like he said ^^^^^
But seriously, it really is total nonsense that something that has not happened can be seen.
The problem is: for instance, someone tells me that im going to get killed in a car crash tomorrow, they had a premonition. I make sure I don't go in a car tomorrow, I stay at home, does this mean they then have to have a different premonition?
It really is too ridiculous for words, all in the same category as this God theory.

It’s so interesting to read everyone’s comments and with every argument/debate it brings the for and against answers, each opinion valid for that person without a doubt and those comments reasonable to read. However, what I find a little disconcerting is the fact that some people who don’t experience whatever the debate is about, will dismiss the knowledge of those who have had it happen to them. It’s like me saying that the puma/big cat/rare bird (whatever) you purport to have seen in the field/garden wasn’t there and you made it up even though you KNOW you saw what you claim to have seen.
I cannot decipher nor prove that any premonition or foresight I’ve had is there, I cannot touch my thought processes I don’t think it’s possible at all for any scientist to touch them either so things of this nature IMO can’t be proved by scientific methods unfortunately. I would love them to be to show that these things do happen and that when they do it would enable people to understand more about the future if events that come about sometime hence have been “seen” at a previous time.
I guess it’s one of those events that either you’ve had it happen or not and those who haven’t won’t be able to understand those who have and of course it bears relation to one’s own beliefs on a subject. I think for me the most significant one was my friend’s sisters death because I actually wrote it down days before and it’s not something I usually do, I didn’t make it up, the thought came into my mind, was very strong and days later it happened. Sorry to those who don’t believe it, you are entitled to your opinion and it’s great to read them.
@ Ratter, most people who have these "thoughts" don't go around telling people because why would you, they are thoughts, I don't see them that that are definitely going to happen. If you experienced it you would know that it's something akin to you thinking you will go to the shop and you doing it or not doing it or any other of the 1,000's of thought processes you may have during the day. You wouldn't list them down, we take them for granted, but then on the odd occasion something you have thought later came true...that's all it is for me but some are more significant than others - I can't explain it. As for the god thing...ah...I'm not religious at all so can understand you on that...<smile>
