Whatever the ins and outs of this and whether people care or not, the fact is that Halal-style slaughter would never have been countenanced had it not been for religious requirements in the same way that Sikh motor cyclists would not have been provided with an exemption from the crash helmet law but for religious requirements . If laws are made there is...

I think colmc's perceptive posts and clips illustrate perfectly the utter stupidity and cruelty that these religious exemptions allow. There is no earthly practical reason why the preposterously barbaric practice of ritualised slaughter should be allowed in the UK. Killing animals is a messy enough business and conventional abattoirs do as much as they can to mitigate the animals’ suffering. The practice offends me even more than eating “unclean” meat offends religious fanatics and I don’t see why I should be offended simply to accommodate the ridiculous proclivities of one or two minority religions. Ritually slaughtered meat is now being imposed in many places simply because conventionally slaughtered flesh upsets the religious sensitivities of a very small minority.
So I will repeat my earlier suggestion - just as there is no place for FGM (which we are told is a “cultural” problem) there is no place for ritualised slaughter in the UK and those who want to take advantage of it should either move elsewhere or at the very least be compelled to secure their supplies from a country where such barbaric practices are happily accommodated. Selling such meat in the UK without clear and unambiguous labelling in big letters both in the stores where it is sold and on the product where possible should be compulsory and it should not be provided without alternative in places such as prisons and schools where the occupants have little choice over what they eat.
By the way, key plus, I’m not quite sure what you are saying in response to naomi. Are you suggesting that Islam is the “only truth” and we Infidels will rot in hell (or wherever) should be choose to say or believe otherwise? If so, I don’t think it’s naomi who needs some fresh air. I’m glad you can now buy your meat at Tescos. Of course it will not worry you, but “we people” who are offended by slitting conscious animals’ throats now cannot. Just as an aside, perhaps you could enlighten me as to precisely why this method of slaughter is so important and necessary and why other methods are so unacceptable. Please don’t say that it’s because it’s written in the Koran or some other wooly explanation. A practical explanation would help me understand your viewpoint a little more, as would your views on colmc54‘s remarks and his clips. However, I won't hold my breath.

We should have clearer labels on food so that we could make our own minds up. I am fed up with all this secrecy regarding halal meat. I definitely will be more vigilant in future. No halal meat !!
I will also be looking for the special labels that Morrisons put on some of their products especially during Ramadan. Apparently Morrisons support a Charity called Zakat . For every item sold that bears the special label Morrisons contribute to this Islamic charity for poor Muslims abroad. Something else that is being done quietly ..We really need to be more aware of what the supermarkets are doing .

Thanks for all the very informative answers, many of which deserve best answer along with NJ. It make me wonder how many other unacceptable (to the majority)practices are being condoned by authoritites that should know better. I do find this inverse religious discimination completely hypocritical and wonder what other loony religion will be able to justify it's bestial practices on religious grounds.
NJ, Thank you.
Keyplus, your rudeness is, as usual, a sure sign of the absence of a logical response. Perhaps you should follow your own advice and meet some real people like the British Muslim speaking here who says amongst other things….
//We Muslims should be appalled by the sale of halal meat by stealth//
... and adds a bit of light reading for the apologists ……..
//It is high time the white, liberal, Guardian-reading classes stopped behaving like apologists and woke up. There is a fundamentalist Trojan horse in our midst, and we must take corrective action. //

Just to add I found that ^^ when I was having a quick look for retailers of non-halal meat. I didn't find any - although I did come across some well known names whose products are halal - Campbell's and Tate & Lyle among them. If anyone else has a bit more time to search, a list could be useful to those who would prefer not to buy halal foods.

i was widely derided when i said many of the butchers in the capital are only halal, from markets in Brixton, East Street, and beyond, the supermarkets are or have been selling it unlabelled as such, and now we know that all New Zealand lamb is halal, why? shouldn't people at least have the choice. I can buy from a non halal butchers, my choice, however if they are only halal, not only is that not in keeping with my feelings, but they don't sell any pork products,
