Ladybirder, that explains it , I hope :o) only a couple of days ago I rescued a cat and a pigeon that had been caught in traps in a neighbouring derelict house. Not the actions of a cruel person I imagine.

I hope you err "rescued" the traps as well Jom? Why would they be in a derelict house?

Ladybirder, I our village we have a problem with pigeons, they spend a lot of the day sitting on the clocktower and s*itting on the tourists. They are nomally controlled by an out of season cull which involves every person who owns a suitable firearm blasting the bejesus out of them. As the numbers build again during the breeding/tourist season someone has had the bright idea of installing traps in the derelict/empty houses that are used as roosts. A good idea in principle but nobody checks regularly to deal with any trapped animals/birds theyto prevent them dying of thirst. This is France, nobody gives a toss about cruelty to animals. I would need a van to remove all the traps so I will release any undealt with victims and leave the traps un set..

Some may well but most really aren't bothered too much. The trapped cat for example, when I drew the attention of a neighbouring couple to it's plaintive cries and scratching they just gave gallic shrugs and went in.

Of course there is cruelty inherent in nature 'red in tooth and claw' and our species is no exception, we are just animals after all who evolved, as a result of the evolutionary pressures meted out to us by this planet, to end up with large brains with a high cognitive capacity, but still animals just the same.

I remember a friend telling me about when he was in the Caribbean working cutting sugar cane. When the fields are set alight everything living there makes a run for it or dies. He saw something there that he never forgot, namely the sight of a huge female rat running for her life with several of her babies hanging onto her back and two more gripped in her mouth!

It is religions, not science or atheists, that spout that we are not animals ourselves but something god has made in his/her/it's/or their own image/s depending on which of the thousands of religions that have come and gone throughout human history you opt for.

I think that is why I get so upset about the fact that religious slaughter, now such an avoidable, unnecessary form of cruelty, has been allowed by politicians, even though it is rightly illegal for all others.

It's not that in doing so they dignify cruel and superstitious alien beliefs, it's because being avoidable it becomes unnecessary, gratuitous and indefensible, with millions of animals we slaughter here in this country the helpless, voiceless victims.

I will not knowingly buy or eat halal meat but apart from the big supermarkets there is hardly anywhere to buy non-halal meat where I live these days. I'm surrounded by halal butchers.

Muslims despise dogs yet many breed these poor creatures in appalling conditions for sale. Not forgetting those Muslim prisoners here in the UK who complained when dogs were to be used to search their cells. The rate that Islam is spreading in our country, in but a few decades to come I seriously fear for our canine companions.

Ladybirder, There are halal butchers but they are labelled 'Halal' outside the shop, I have assumed so because the others aren't halal. I'll have to do some research.

Independent halal butchers shops here have signs outside stating they're 'halal'. The supermarkets, it seems, make no distinction - hence the customers haven't a clue what they're buying.

Naomi when I enquired about some lamb for sale in my local garden centre Food Hall the butcher could only tell me it was slaughtered locally and when I asked if that was by the halal method he didn't know. I didn't buy.

Jews have managed for years to supply food that meets their religious dietary requirements – as have Muslims. The situation in which we now find ourselves results from corporate greed - and for fundamentalist Islam it’s a triumph. Another nail in the coffin.

No need to go completely vegetarian, Jeza. Pork is still available. I seriously think the only way to stop it is to stop buying. Hit in the pocket, the suppliers will soon change tactics.

I won't buy halal. If I'm unsure, i ask the staff- who usually don't know either. But hopefully the fact that customers are asking, might make them realise not everyone will accept it.
