They're not.
//It’s very difficult to understand the things that impel people to some of the dreadful actions that we have seen over the last few years unless you have some sense of religious literacy.//
That’s true – and he doesn’t.

No, she doesn’t. Read her post again.
//I think Welby is trying to work out what makes them wicked//
If he did his research he’d know what makes them wicked. He’s talking arrant nonsense.
//then there might be a chance of stopping them being wicked.//
Dream on! Islam doesn’t rationalise – and it doesn’t compromise.

AG - //Before anyone happens to make any comparison with the Irish peace process and what can be achieved, this is not even on the same stratosphere.
No cup of tea,no dialogue, they have to be extinguished. //
Quite apart from the sheer impracticality of what you suggest - your position simply puts you in the same mind-set of the terrorists -
'I think you are evil and you want to destroy me because you think the way I live is wrong.
Therefore, I am going to destroy you first because I don't understand why you think the way you do, and that ignorance makes me frightened.
I can't destroy you, but I will kill millions of innocent people trying.'
The terrorist view, or the Western government view?
Well actually, they are identical.

Super Smashing ... let me know when he has accomplished that. //
That approach is exactly what keeps us in the current state of terrorism and 'war on terror' to use President Bush's laughable an inaccurate (but great vote-catching!) phrase!

I think the attempt to understand why this extremism flourishes, is a very laudable suggestion. It is only by knowing the 'enemy' that one can effectively counter it and overcome. Whether anything useful can come out of it is open to debate, but that is no reason not to try.
Eventually one must achieve creating a reasonable mindset in the communities where the recruitment to the 'cause' occurs. It's a long haul activity. Removing existing perpetrators of violence is necessary but the difficulty ensures it becomes simply holding the situation in check, a stalemate which continues to create victims.
It is the desire not to join them that we need to make universal, and a desire to revolt against the violent extremists among those forced into the group.

Has Welby forgotten Father Jacques Hamel?
Reaction:
Hervé Morin, president of the region, said: “This man was a good man, he always had a kind word for everyone. He served at this church for 30 years. Everyone is shocked. This was not just the killing of a man, it was the cutting of the throat of a priest … an act sufficiently thought out to further destabilise French society … and that’s the risk. French society is in danger.”
How can you expect to have dialogue with the likes of those who perpetrate crimes such as this?
It sends out a signal that it is not just French society that is in danger but any society that does not recognise radical Islam.

You - and others - can scoff all you like.
If you take the position that I an naaive, and I don't understand the world like you do, tut tut, how sad, it simply absolves you from the tiresome reality that we are in this situation, and we need to be finding other ways to get out of it than trying and failing to destroy the Islamists.
So you can think that I am not the realist - that's fine, I think exactly the same of you.

naomi and others are seriously underestimating the intellect of Welby.
This is a man who rose to the very highest executive level of the international oil industry, by his own efforts before deciding to give that life up to join the Church. He then started again as a parish vicar before rising to become Archbishop of Canterbury , do NOT underestimate him!!!
