It is painful to watch a loved one suffer and die. We naturally grieve such a loss.

It is comforting to know, however, that our Creator, understands our grief. More than that, he longs to use his almighty power to restore life to the dead. Notice the hope conveyed in the words of Job, recorded at Job 14:14-15,says
If a man dies, can he live again?
I will wait all the days of my compulsory service
Until my relief comes.
15 You will call, and I will answer you.
You will long for the work of your hands.

Goodlife, // they [Adam and Eve] became imperfect and sinful. //

Unless God is imperfect and sinful that’s nonsense. According to the bible - this from your version - God’s words: //“Here the man has become like one of us in knowing good and bad. Now in order that he may not put his hand out and take fruit also from the tree of life and eat and live forever....//

...and promptly booted the pair of them out of Eden so that they would not live forever. Just saying.

PS. I wonder who God was referring to when he said ‘us’? Any idea Goodlife?
At last... someone actually answering the question. If we are made in God's image... he really wasn't that great, clearly. What is the purpose of us all dying to achieve everlasting life?
And how do you? Presumably, God watches everything we do. Does he really prefer the worshippers, to those who just help other people without praying?
Put simply, ancient upper classes needed to be able to keep brawny fighty types in some kind of order and so sent their brainwashers out to convince agitators and ne'erdowells that if they behaved for a maximum 70 years, putting up with poverty, plague and pestilence and a generally shatty time then their reward would be eternal life in the light of the lord.

Like a snowball rolling downhill it grew larger, scooping up the unwary until it was so big it became an unstoppable force.

Power was grabbed by various differing factions but in the end the aim was the same, continued power and profit/prophet.

An uneasy understanding is now in place.

The hapless remain powerless, poor, decaying but hold on to the fairy tale of jam tomorrow and it'll all be over by Christmas.

If you stand back and have a right good look it's pathetic really.
Well, we know that, Doug:-). Just trying to see why some people want to believe it...
I’ve read the rest of the thread now and wonder why I bothered. The usual tedious claptrap about rules.

Just a few bits to say.

Mozz, this is not reincarnation. That’s something entirely different.

For those, like Goodlife, who preach doom and gloom to non-believers I would say ‘go whistle’. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to live for eternity with miserable sycophants like Jehovah’s Witnesses - or with the pious representing any other brand of Christianity - or any other religion for that matter. God - if you’re there - save us from the holy - please!!

For those who choose the gentle option of believing they will some day be with loved ones again, who am I to say they won’t? It’s a lovely idea and if it gives them peace and contentment I have no intention joining the attempt to burst their bubble.

Finally (for the moment at least) I suspect it’s possible that something of a human being does continue to exist after death - call it the soul if you like We won’t find the answer in religion though - in my opinion.

Okay, you can chuck your bricks now. I’ll catch them at some point even if it isn't tonight.

Belief like lots of things can be so personal that it is almost impossible to convey to someone else what it means to each and every individual.
^ I'm sure there's some punctuation missing from that sentence but my eyes are sore.

I hope you get your answers.
There is of course, no problem with people believing what they believe, if it doesn't affect anyone else.
While I wouldn't throw bricks, naomi... :-) I can't see any way on earth that any part of a human could live on after death. Or even that it would be evolutionary or desirable. I do believe in a soul... but in a psychological way, not a supernatural eternal way
I fear that Goodlife drives more people away from religion than attracts them to it. For all we know that might be his plan though. He could very possibly be working for the devil.
Naomi, there is an irony to be observed, that reminding people of the rules, and the implementation of them, allows the continuation of the site on which you scoff about them.

In common with your reading and dismissal of the thread this far, I wish you hadn't bothered.
The Golden Rule,'Do onto others as you would have them do onto you', is the way to go.
If a life spent following it leads to a place in Heaven, good. If not st least you've left the world a better place than you found it.
Great answer at 23:18, as usual.

Boring one at 8:58, as usual.
Tomus, the Cathars believed that two God’s existed. The evil God of the Old Testament, creator of the physical world, they identified as the Devil, and the good God of the New Testament the creator of the spiritual world. It’s interesting to note however, that according to the bible God slaughtered millions, whereas the Devil was responsible for only about 10 deaths - and that with God’s blessing. Good/evil? The $64,000 dollar question.

Thanks Margie.

Think it was over and done with when you left the thread Bobbi -I left about 10 minutes after you.
I never had a problem with Daisy, as I’ve always said “ Respect me and I’ll show you the same , disrespect me and ....I’ll show you the same”

Naomi. I really don't know why you bother to come on this section.
All you do is critizise and pick fault with everything. But know this for sure, if you think we are preaching doom and gloom now, just wait a little longer and you will really know what we mean by doom & gloom. But by that time it will be too late for anyone to change their minds.
The Bible gives a wonderful hope for a life that we have never experienced and to live in a world without war, crime, violence, poverty, sickness & death. But if you don't want that kind of life, just carry on as you are. The Bible was written for True Christians, those who recognise the Grand Creator and these ones have the true understanding of the scriptures unlike you, and other atheists. And you never will understand because you don't have God's Spirit and unless you change, you never will!!
Don't bother replying because I've had enough of you and won't be saying anymore on this subject to you.
Good life you can NOT say don’t bother to reply , this is a Q&A site , not somewhere to bang your drum and believe you’re right about stuff
