Also if they are having fireworks it may be too light any earlier

Actually you mean "America will be watching" - so the whole thing is at a fluffing stupid time here so that they can have it on primetime TV.

I'd imagine that the late start time is, in fact, to allow everyone to arrive on time. And is actually quite convenient for TV in this country also

I don't know about you but my young child won't be in the least bit interested. Furthermore he'll be safely tucked up in bed by the time it starts allowing me to watch in peace :-) As for older children I wouldn't have thought bedtime in the early hours for this 'once in a life time event/embarrassment' depending on what side of bed one has got out of was all that outrageous. And hopefully will allow the actual attendees who have paid an arm and a leg - hopefully not literally if course - to get through the traffic jams/travel to the capital after work

Well, there you are then :-) Personally I love all the nonsense associated with it. And I remember with fondness the hilarious interlude in 1996 in Atlanta when the crowd in the stadium rose to acclaim the team from ... Georgia (oh dear!)
