i am a groundsman at my local tennis club.
i have a grounds chairman who i answer to and talk over the grass condition etc.
there is a chairman and vice chaiman of the club who try to get me to do things that i know are wrong for the conditions of the grass.
they seem to think however that they are able to have the last word
due to their status.
do i just answer to my grounds chairman or am i expected to jump when they talk.

I would go back to the grounds chairman and talk to them about your situation.
It does seem a rather top-heavy management structure for a local tennis club (unless it's Wimbledon).
Anyway, I would ask the Grounds Chairman for advice.
My guess is that it would depend on your contract. If board members at the company I work for asked me to do something it would be difficult to refuse, but I'd clear it with my immediate boss first and wait until any row subsided.

many thanks for your replies,i have chatted to my head of grounds chairman and he himself is not to sure.
just thought i would you guys to see if anyone had ay ideas.
Now you've raised it he should find out.
I suggest you humour them politely but not actually carry out their suggestions. You are the expert and as you time goes by you need to gradually but gently remind them of that. Resist asking them "Why hire a dog and bark yourself?", but that's what I'd want to say!
They should leave you to get on with your job and stop interfering. Do they think they know better than you? Guess whose fault it would be if you did as they suggested with the grass and ruined it? Not theirs you can bet.
