System Restore

I have Windows XP and System Restore has stopped working. I've been through Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services and Applications, and System Restore Services but can't find any reason. Old restore points have been deleted and two new ones have been created since then. I gather that many people have this problem. Has anyone succeeded in getting System Restore working again please?
