Automatic updating

My wife has Vista on her computer, and quite often everything closes down and she gets a message saying "Configuring updates....." This is really annoying, as it takes about 5-10 minutes to complete then she has to boot up again. Can it be stopped? It would be much better if she was asked if she wants to do an update!

Click Control Panel > Check for Updates (in the Security section) > Settings.

Change the way the updates are downloaded there.

but don't disable them ;-(
