using youtube

I often see in the press about something being a "youtube phenomenom" but I can't think for the life of me how do you find these out ( except by hearing it in the news). Is there a way of using youtube that I don't know about? I know to put a name in and then select from what comes up but how do I find out what every one else is watching - is there a directory of what is included , or a list of most popular.. any hints or tips would be appreciated
