missing photos

Hi,
I just asked this question in the wrong category, so I'll do it again here if you don't mind.
acer laptop, ran out of battery. plugged it into the mains, it went into system recovery, now all photos and files have gone, but the screen saver and anti virus software etc are all still there. the hard drive is showing half full, about 20gb. any ideas where the photos are hiding?

Were they in My Docs/My Pictures?
Looked in Explorer on Root of drive somewhere for and backup folders .. or even another small partition with recovery folders in it?
