External hard drive

The external HDD I have at the moment only had 70GB capacity and is now down to 18GB capacity so I've bought a "bigger" one.How do I transfer everything over please???This will probably sound daft but how do you have two HDD's in the loop to do this????? Thanks!!

Use windows explorer. Think of your HD's as files and just copy from one to the other.

Thanks for that but is there no way of transferring them en bloc ie HDD no1 onto HDD no 2 and not as individual files etc???

ps I have everything plugged in but there is no reference anywhere as to the new HDD.........where can it be?????

Plug both drives in at the same time, open my computer (or computer if on vista) and you will see both drives listed as separate drive letters, double click on the old drive to open it so you can see the files and then press CTRL + A (this will select everything on the drive) then press CTRL + C (this will copy everything selected).

Then go back to my computer, open the new drive and Press CTRL + V (this will paste everything you have just copied onto the new drive)

It will probably take some time to copy everything across, just wait untill it's finished and job done.

I've managed to do it thanks CF.but I'm not quite sure whether it was all copied as it seemed to come to an abrupt end

check if the contents of one are the same size as the contents of the other. If not, something may have been missed.

As jono says check how much is on each, if you open my computer and right click on each drive and select properties it will say how much space is used, as long as the used space is pretty much the same you have copied it all over.

Thanks again for your replies.It will be difficult to assess the GB transfer from the original HDD as that came out of an old PC and a lot of that capacity would have been used up with built in progs.But if I find that certain items are "missing" I might try another transfer.
