Does your burning software allow a test burn first? i.e. simulates burning without actually writing to cd. That will show you if the software is working and drive access ok. If test ok, try and burn on another pc/laptop. Does a neighbour or friend have one? If still fails, take batch back to shop and exchange. Maxell are a good named brand so must be a bad batch.
If the discs burn OK on a neighbour's computer and not yours then the lenses of the lasers in your CD writer may be dirty after 8 years of use. You can buy a disc to clean them (like an ordinary CD with two little brushes attached) Try the Pound shop!
