automatic updates on vista

my sister got a second hand pc , which runs fine her only prob is when it trys to do automatic updates it gets so far then comes up with the message "windows modules installer stopped working and was closed" anyone have any ideas

I just googled the problem, and it seems very common, but with no real answers.
Some say don`t allow automatic updates, install manually.
I`ve installed manually from the beginning and had no problem yet, although I`ve only had vista for two days.
