More info.......email provider is "Talk talk"...........any good?

Sprinter...LOL
I think he means Outlook Express, Windows Mail. That sort of thing sqad.
Question Author
237 right........windows............I think ;-)
OK, the basics are...

Whatever they are sending the mail from will have the details of two servers setup, the relevant one here is the SMTP server (otherwise known as the outgoing server)

the SMTP server can be setup in two different ways....

1) you use the SMTP server that belongs to whoever your ISP is (so who you pay for your connection), this will work without a username and password but will only work when you are connected to your own internet connection.

2) you use the SMTP server of your email provider (if it's different to the one above), to use this you need to enter a username and password to authenticate with the server but once the username and password have been entered you can use the server to send mail from anywhere in the world, regardless of whos connection you are using.

So what is required is....

Who supples the email (talk talk)
Who supplies the connection (is it talk talk too?)
And, most important, what mail software they are using.

With the information above myself (or others) can easily give brief instructions on what they need to do to get it working.

Chuck....thanks.

I am going to read your answer (reading it is not the problem) and taking it into my brain for interpretation (that is the problem ;-)) and if I don´t get back to you........no disrespect as it just means her friend will have to sort it out for herself.

I promise I will try to understand it.
Question Author
Chuck.......I think I understand it now.

email supplier...talk talk
Connection .....talk talk
Software......Windows XP

Over to you Chuck
I had the same problem with TalkTalk until last night - except I could send them from my Microsoft E-mail, but not receive them. I had to "open a new account" on my Talktalk webmail, which sounds cumbersome but took two minutes. I think Talktalk must be doing something with their accounts. There is a TalkTalk forum though, wihich I found helpful - I found it on the "My Account" part of my Talktalk home page....

Misky....thanks for the info.
OK, mail software would have been better than windows version, but I'll take a guess on outlook express (if it's outlook the steps are similar anyhow)

in outlook express click on the tools menu and select accounts, in the window that comes up make sure the mail tab is selected and then double click on the email account that will be listed. Once the account properties have opened click on the server tab and make sure that the following is listed under the "outgoing server (SMTP)"

smtp.talktalk.net

Once that's in there click on OK a few times to close everything and then try again.
