Not able to open you tube links on ab

nor can i get into you tube from firefox, is this a setting i need to alter somewhere please?

Try the proxy settings.... but that should stop everything from working..

Control panel > internet options click on the connections tab, then click LAN settings and make sure all boxes do not have a tick in them.

i unclicked one box in there, the rest were blank, still can't get to you tube and the links on mamya's nite nite thread are still just blank spaces on ab : (

OK, try this...

Copy the line of text below (the one between the lines), then press hold the window key and press R... when the run box opens paste the line you've just copied into the run box and press enter.

This should open a text file, have a look at the text file and see if it contains anything apart from the text below. (again between the lines)

That explains a lot!!!

Firstly follow my steps above again to open the hosts file, delete everything you have in yours and replace it with mine by copy and pasting the example one I posted (it's OK, it's the standard one taken from my computer) then close the host file and click yes when requested do you want to save.... you should now be able to access youtube (and all the other sites in the list on yours)

Once that is done I'd very seriously suggest running a full scan with malwarebytes while in safe mode because you have been infected by something that has inserted all those extra entries in your hosts file. SO (copied from a previous answer)

You'll be best off using another computer to download the file in the link below and put it on a usb memory stick, or CD. Then start the computer with the problem in safe mode by switching it on and tapping the F8 key straight away. When you get the boot menu select safe mode with networking. Once the computer is started install malwarebytes from the USB stick, or CD and let it update (if you have a earlier version of windows than windows7 wireless won't work for this step, you'll need to connect by Ethernet cable). Once the program has installed and updated run a full scan with it and remove anything it finds.

Hi Chuck, not having much luck here, I can delete all that in notepad, yet when i paste your version in a pop up box appears saying it can't be saved as it's already there

Oh yeah.... of course that would happen, Oppps sorry, that's me not thinking...

OK run through the steps to open the host file again (copy and paste "notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" into the run box) but do NOT press enter or click OK.....

Instead hold down CTRL and SHIFT and then press enter, agree to the security thingy that pops up and you should now be able to change the file and save it OK.

Right do it this way....

Click the start button and paste the notepad line into the start/run box at the bottom of the start menu and then press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER at the same time and then you should get the security popup and it will work

(I didn't actually know it wouldn't work from the other run box... something I've learnt today)

ok thanks, I was doing that but nothing happens, it's pretty tedious all of this i wish i'd never bothered changing the laptop now I've no patience, but i've got this one cos the other one had keys missing and was so slow

I've been trying to sort this out for 4 hours now , I'm going to go out and ignore it for a while, it is ridiculous why i can't just use search for everything, can't get to google again now : (

Click on the start button in the bottom left... when it opens you should have a search/run box at the bottom of the menu

And then hold down CTRL and SHIFT at the same time, and while keeping them held down press enter. then you should get a security popup which you click yes for you should then be able to change the contents of the hosts file that opens and replace it with the example one I posted earlier and when you close the window and it asks if you want to save it will save OK.

TBH... the malware scan would *probably* clear it on it's own... but not definitely.
