There is a link to Nir Sofer's page to download it in the article, but read the comments first ! Works fine for me (XP SP3) and detects the wired connection as well as the only wireless one that is running right now.

For the security and restricting access, it's your router which handles that bit, but if you post details of which one it is, I'm sure one of the more tech oriented people will be along soon to tell you how to access the router and set it up
I looked at downloading this and my zonealarm tells me the site is known to distribute spyware so beware!
Basic status ..
Start/Run
type command and enter

oh I think I can see now - went too fast first time

albags i did as you said and 49 results were there! some say established aothers say syn-sent. should i be worried?
Well at least huderon understood the question! Not quite sure what doing a netstat or anything else on a local computer would do to help with the monitoring of a connection on a router!

Check the logs on the router and see what they can report, some give better logging than others but that's your only way to check what's being done/used on the connection overall.
My router logs who is using my wifi, and also allows me to restrict users

errrm, how chuck? im crap at this lol
"albags i did as you said and 49 results were there! some say established aothers say syn-sent. should i be worried?"

No... because you are not checking your connection usage, you are looking at what that one computer is connected to (and 49 connections isn't an unusual amount)

Your router is the only thing that can tell you what or who is using your connection... if you are worried than the DHCP leases log is the first place to look.
Question Author
DHCP leases log? your prob sick of me already lol
Just an illustration of what can be done .. and what can't.
It's a good way to start!

Who's connected?
Just watch this ...

That will be all you want.
Well at least the second video actually had some relevance to the question.
Well if you're worried about connections and who is downloading or what is connected .. then both examples are relevant.

looked twice and no help mate. thanks anyway for trying to help
Just install the program recommended in the second vid if you're just interested in who's connected.
What router do you have? You can do that through the router software
