svchost process

Having read the question below regarding slow PCs and running processes, I decided to check mine out.

It seems that svchost.exe is OK to have as a running process, but I have it running six times!

Two originate from "system", one from "local service" and two from "network service" and one from "user 1". Is this right? They use between 1000K and 19428K.

If it's not right, how do I know which ones to kill!?

Also you could follow the link to the Symantec site if you feel theres a problem as it gives you a removal tool for any virus that could be using the SVCHOST.EXE name (W32.Welchia worm apparently replicates this name).

It's unlikely to be a virus. svchost is responsible for managing windows services. You can dramatically cut down on these and save resources though. Some are completely unnecessary. Click start->control panel->administrative tools. Then when the window appears, select services. These are services that run in the background. Some of these you'll never use, and in the case of the messenger service, some popups can be prevented by shutting this off. You'll want to stop services, and also prevent them from starting. If you see one you think you don't need, click it, then click stop, and also select disabled. You might not be able to close too many, some are useful. Just have a look at the description and stop a few. Don't close svchost in windows taask manager. This will very likely result in a system shutdown. Although i mentioned in a previous thread how to stop this.
