Can information passed over a wireless router be seen by other parties?

If you have high level security then it is very difficult (Never say impossible).

If you use WEP then they can't see it without decrypting (which is fairly easy). If you don't use any encryption, people can see it very easily.

Personally, I don't use any encryption on my wireless network simply because of the overheads. It's slow enough as it is!
You have more encryption options than WEP and you shouldn't notice any significant loss of speed.  I use WEP along with MAC Address filtering and do online gaming and downloading with no problems.
