I had my contract phone stolen so in between getting a new contract phone I bought a temporary phone as I still had 2 months left to pay on contract, but still used orange and my same number. I now have a new phone and contract still with orange. The temp phone I bought I am now going to sell, will it be locked to orange??

I would assume that it would be locked, but not 100% sure ........ easiest way to find out, would be to put a non-orange sim card in your phone and see what happens.
Depends. Was the handset bought from Orange ? Did it say it was locked when you bought it ?
If you bought a handset without a contract it shouldn't be locked to anyone

Thanks, I bought it from Tesco then rang Orange to activate it. I used the same phone number.
It'll be unlocked then.
PS you don't activate handsets, you activate accounts/SIM cards.
