I understand that you can buy a gadget that will let me use my iPad when away from my home and not within range of a BT hotspot.
Has anyone any information please?

If I am away from home I log on to someone else's wifi. Either in a pub or coffee shop or someone's homes. I also have 3G which is on O2 PAYG on my now old iPad so if wifi is not an option I pay for a months worth of data.
If you have a Celular iPad you can get a sim card and put that in. You may be able to tether your iPad to your phone depending upon the phone and your contract or you can use a MiFi Dongle
Cellular iPad
can't you use your mobile phone to create a personal hotspot,
Yes you can Paul.
