The first is a BIOS password, which locks the computer even before Windows tries to load. If that's what you're referring to you screen will look very basic when you're asked for it, possibly like this:

Then there's a Windows password, which lets you into Windows itself. If that's what you're referring to your screen will look a bit prettier, possibly something like this

If it's a BIOS password the easiest way to remove it is open up the laptop (or get someone who knows what they're doing to do so for you), locate the CMOS battery, remove it, wait a short while and then replace it.
