why every time I switch off my computer says windows needs updating, and it takes up to a day to update. This is driving me insane.

it "needs updating" or "updating", leave it on overnight it wont do any harm lots of people dont even turn then off at all

Doesnt updating use up a lot of your monthly gigabytes or megabytes or whatever they are called?

If you're updating gigabytes that's one heck of an update ! That's more a complete new operating system plus bells and whistles and more.
