Hi all,
Ive got my first smartphone. I rarely use it for calls, mainly for surfing the net.
The battery needs charging constantly, 2-3 a day.
Is this normal?

You need to take a look at which apps at running in the background. Stop anything you don't need and your problem will probably disappear:

Net surfing can use up the battery. How much depends on how long you surf.

Normally you need not to charge your phone that frequently...
