I don't know whether I'm watching too much TV or using the PC too much either but my eyes are beginning to get sore.Is there a way to make the background colour of white not quite so glaring on the PC? Thanks.

You need to be able to clearly see all of the numbers, from 0 to 10, on both of the relevant lines. If you can't follow the instructions to adjust your display.
It's also important to optimise the text display on your monitor:
Click 'Start'
Type 'cleartype' into the box.
Click on 'Adjust Cleartype Text'
Check that there's a tick shown there, enabling Cleartype.
Click 'Next' and choose the text that looks best to you.
Repeat until completed.
