I am a bit careful because of the possibility of downloading an infected anti-virus from the internet.

I have checked out AVG, but it says, 'download AVG trial'. Does that mean it is temporary in nature, since it is a 'trial'?
If I were you I'd take the plunge and buy a good, but cheap, anti virus.

I'd recommend Panda Antivirus. Available from Scan for a little over 4; sure its available elsewhere at about the same price:

You need anti-virus, a firewall, and some sort of spyware catcher.

I would suggest AVG Anti-Virus which does have a free version if you look for it. I know it is free because I use it.

Zone Alarm firewall. Again they have a free version which I use.

Lots of spyware catchers but I use Adaware and WinPatrol which are both free.

There is also SpyBot Search and Destroy and others

Here is the page for the free edition of AVG
