Free Avast Is Due To Expire

this was recommended by someone on here, and i thought it was actually free.....its about to run out.
I need a security package and i can't get the Kaspersky that i paid for
to work. Can anyone suggest what to do now,

I was signing up to Avast every month so decided to subscribe for 2 years. But now I'm upset to find that extra levels of security are now being offered - at a price.

this probably doesn't help but i've used the free inbuilt windows defender for years and never had a problem ...
