Avast IS free!

You might occasionally get a message telling you that you need to update it (and offering you the chance to upgrade to their full security suite) but you should be able to carry out the standard update process entirely free of charge. (I've been using it for well over a decade without having to pay for anything).
Question Author
how do i update it...
If you're seeing a message telling you that Avast is about to 'run out', there should be a 'renew' or similar button there. (When you click on it you'll probably be offered the chance to access the full commercial product, possibly with a free trial, but there should be another button which enables you to simply renew the free version too).
Question Author
will see what happens, trying not to panic.....
And if you don't pay up it gives you all your old viruses back !
Question Author
OG are you being serious, or having a joke with me
No, they save them up ready to return them :-D
Question Author
so what to do Chris.....
Just update the free version and don't click on the full/paid version.

O_G is attempting humour.
Did BB's link not help ?
Question Author
didn;t look at it so far...
If you are getting messages that Avast is about to expire then I would guess that you did not install the free version but a trial of the full version which does cost.
If that is the case delete the existing version and install the free version

^^^ The same thought occurred to me.

Click the little Avast icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. (You might have to click on 'Show hidden icons' first). If you're using the free version of Avast you should see a window like this one
http://www.upl.co/uploads/Avast1581449844.jpg
with the word 'Free' up at the top left and 'Upgrade' down at the the bottom left. (You can ignore the warning, with a 'Resolve' button, across the button; it's only trying to sell you something).

If you don't see 'Free' and 'Upgrade', you're using a free trial of the full commercial version of the software (rather than the totally free one). As Paul suggests, you can then uninstall the full version and install the free one. [NB: I recommend restarting your PC in between uninstalling and reinstalling].
Question Author
so you go into control panel uninstall avast then install from pauln link....
I'm not sure with Avast, but most of the programs that trick you into installing a paid-for version will offer you the chance to revert to the free version when the trial expires. I would wait for it to expire and see what happens - you can always remove and install the free version yourself then, if necessary.

thanks bhg..
emmie, you asked for help. At 17:57 yesterday, I offered a link that might help, but, at 18:50, almost 1 hour later, you say 'didn't look at it', yet you still continue to seek help from others. I don't feel inclined to offer help any more.
Question Author
sorry BB, i have had some problems, too many to put on here.

will look at your link, i had a message saying that the avast was running out today...
Question Author
also i don't quite know what i am doing, personally or with regards to the security package.
I paid for Kaspersky which i have been using for years and that is uncomplicated or was until it decided that it wouldn't install.
I will get this sorted, so don't be angry, i'm sorry...
