Husband having TV increasingly loud and rest of us don't want/need it that long. I have a 6 year old smart TV. Can any one recommend headphones that are comfy and will allow the wearer to set their own volume whilst leaving the tv table to be heard by the others?

You said the headphones you were looking at had an optic connector, so you wouldn't need that adapter.
I wouldn't buy those headphones, the ones Buenchico linked to are far superior.
I suggest you buy that adapter then try the headphones you have been using for testing. If it works get the headphones. If it doesn't, send the adapter back

that was yesterday :) I went to currys and bought the ones chris recommended this morning
BTW when I said lag, apparently that was wrong - the sound is reaching him a fraction of a second in advance of them saying it on tv

sorry, I am not being very clear.
I was looking at the artiste ones yesterday, and the review led me to believe I would need the DAC adaptor.
Yesterday I just plugged in random wired headphones
However, I took a punt this morning and went to currys and got the sony ones which work when plugged into the virgin box, but with the mismatch between people moving their mouths and the sound arriving in the headphones. Ive now ordered the adaptor.
I appreciate EVERYONE'S input
Better than nothing but I would still try that adapter. If it works, a tenner makes it a bargain
Let us know how well the adapter works, bednobs. I'm sure a lot of people will find it useful at some point.

thank you all
It could be that the TV settings can be altered to sync the headphones with the picture. If you are unlucky it will adjust the TV speaker at the same time and put that out of sync.
