I have a lot of photos and they all want organising so I'm looking for a free program. I would like relatively simple straightforward usage. I want to keep it separated from my pc.

That sentence has left me confused. As i read it, you're looking for a computer program but you don't want it on your PC. I'm lost!

FastStone Image Viewer is an excellent freebie for viewing, editing and managing images. It enables you (among many other things) to tag images for easy finding and to move them quickly between folders:

Faststone Image Viewer, as has already been mentioned, is fantastic. I have used it for many years without a problem. You can safely overule your Avast with it.
I use it in conjunction with Photoshop but on its own you can resize, rename, organise, do basic adjustments like cloning out blemishes, add borders etc etc. I cannot praise it enough.
Again, it is safe as houses!

I'm still confused! Everything you do on a PC uses Windows, whether that be typing a document in Word (or similar), viewing a webpage in Chrome (or similar), etc, etc. A USB memory stick (which, I'm guessing is what you mean by 'a plug memory') simply adds additional storage capacity to a PC. If you want to create folders to store your images in (or allow some software to do it for you), it's entirely up to you as to whether those folders are placed on your PC's hard drive or onto a memory stick.
