Different Telephone Sockets

I have just assisted an elderly into a care home. We have tried to connect her own telephone but the socket doesn't fit the cable end. Nobody seems to know what type of socket it is. How many types are there and can purchase one which will fit?

I think there is only one common telephone socket, which is a wide flat rectangle.

Internet sockets look very similar to phone sockets - I think phone sockets are slightly wider.

Some phones have a very small bit on the end  my phone had a connection bit it fitted onto that then into the wall socket. Maybe phone been unplugged and connection bit left in wall socket.
