Remote Control

I keep buying new remote controls but they keep failing.
This time last year I bought a compatable replacement for £8 but it lasted just a few months so I bought a genuine replacement £25. That was about 8 months ago.
This evening is has stopped working. I've changed the batteries, I've cleaned it, I've rebooted the TV and the Humax box, still nothing.

Thoughts? Suggestions gratefully received.

Assuming you have a mobile phone: open the camera, point the remote at the lens, press and hold the power button.  Can you see a red light on your phone screen?

Do what we did the years past.

Get up, walk a few steps and twiddle a knob, or push a button😏

How old is your TV, Ozzy? Can't remember when I last had a TV with knobs.

Mine has teeny buttons hidden behind a panel on the back that will turn the TV on/off, adjust the volume and change channel laboriously.

My TV definitely isn't as old as me Baz, but it has buttons easily accessible that I can use when the remote is missing or ***.

I remember 405 line tellies

Can't change the source on my TV without the remote, nor the apps.

No red light when I point it at my phone camera.

You obviously have at least 2 remote controls since you mention TV and Humax. Try barry's suggestion with the other one just to prove to yourself you are doing it properly. The red light should be flashing when you press any button on the remote (your phone camera is sensitive to the light emitted by the remote; your eye isn't).

I guess it is still under guarantee.

Pity you don't know of anyone with an identical TV to test it with. (Or maybe it's your TV that's playing up ? Do you still have the compatible one to try ?)

I have (and have had) many remote controllers for various appliances & none has ever failed apart from needing a new battery.

try this.

take the batteries out. working from the top, (from left to right), press every single button on the remote by holding down firm for a count of three.  after you've done the last button, but the batteries back in and try it.

Good thought. Something could be sticking.

I wonder if a red light gets seen (for a while) when the new batteries are put in.

No sticking buttons. But no red signal from either remotes on iPhone camera.

Like everything else trash, trash that they keep making lots of money out of. Pile em high sell em cheap, sod the planet.

My daughter had trouble with her remote controls not working. It wasn't the batteries it was some connection inside tv. Has a new TV now.

If there's no flashing light from either remote and one of them works you're doing something wrong. You have to keep a button on the remote pressed whilst you look at the phone display. Try different buttons and have the phone as close to the remote as you can and pointing straight at it. The light is not very bright but should be visible.

I've tried everything including opening it up and gently cleaning the inside with a dab of alcohol. I've decided to order one more and see if it's that or the Humax box. The TV and its remote works fine.

Eitherway it's probably time to think about a smart TV anyway in the Christmas sales.

Thanks all for your patience!

Maydup, my suggestion wasn't in case any buttons were sticking.  by removing the  batteries first, then depressing every button, it gets rid of any charge to each button and usually resets itself.

Thank you The Winner, I did try that too. Still no life in it but a good tip for another time.
