For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Have you got the manual for your motherboard? It will have an entire chapter devoted to BIOS setup in there. If you haven't got the manual, then you need to find out what make and model your motherboard is, then visit the downloads section of the manufacturer. (Gigabyte, MSI, Biostar etc.) In the downloads section, you will not only be able to download a copy of the manual in Acrobat PDF form, but also the latest chipset drivers, and USB drivers, and if you're feeling brave - the latest BIOS for your board. A word of warning though, if you're current BIOS is up to date enough for your system spec, then you needn't bother flashing your BIOS. When flashing a BIOS, if things go awry (a power cut for example) halfway through, then you have to buy a new motherboard i'm afraid! Don't let this scare you, you can't ruin your motherboard just by downloading a manual for it! If you need any advice on BIOS settings after looking at the manual then just ask. I'll check back here. I'm not an expert, but i know a fair bit about BIOS settings. Good luck.
The default settings are pretty good but we usually use the BIOS to: set the boot device order, APG aperture size to half the RAM fitted, specify whether you have a PnP OS (like Win9x, 2000 or XP), set AGP slot to x2/x4, set IDE device detection to AUTO, set DRAM frequency detection to AUTO, enable USB and O/B sound, set parallel port to ECP + EPP and enabling APM. I expect other people have their own favourite tweaks and I would be intersted cactus' opinion.
